Tone is a world of difference. I used the cheapest spray paint to aquatint this plate and while it doesn’t replace a good airbrush and acrylic aquatint, I was pleasantly surprised. It came out a bit darker than I had expected but the aquatint held up to an hour and 25 minutes in the mordant so at least I know this level of deep black is possible! I’ve slowly been adding to my hope studio for a while and now have enough to at least pull off some simple line work! Here are a sampling of shots from my personal research into a DIY mordant that can be created, used, and disposed of safely and affordably at home. I would love to hear feed back if anyone else has tried this or a similar mix! My current formula has been 2 parts 3% hydrogen peroxide to 3 parts 5% white vinegar and enough iodine free table salt that it no long dissolves. I have also tried heating the vinegar up before mixing in an attempt to speed up the reaction. My biggest concern so far is that all of the grounds I have used are breaking down (besides contact paper stencils). I have tried baked on BIG ground, spray on acrylic aquatint, sharpie, and acrylic paint marker. If anyone has other suggestions for grounds that can be safely and easily used in the home studio, let me know! Also, if anyone out there is keen to the chemistry that is happening here I am interested in knowing more about that and if I can do anything more efficiently. The week before last I got to learn all about photopolymer plates, specifically Toyobo plates, as I finished up my internship at Zeamays. It was a bittersweet moment but I am looking forward to continue with my own work in a wonderful, lively studio. I tried a few different colors and inking techniques for this little photopolymer intaglio plate, including a second etched copper plate. Tiny plate I have had grounded and in my pencil case for months. I went in and added some line work over the texture before spraying on an aquatint and step etching. The red proof features a surface roll.
